In this easy-reading graphic novel, four students at Sifu Faiza's Kung Fu School y, Amy, Sam, and Adam ve a bad encounter with two members of a soccer team, Tom and Stacy. Tom steals the key to the Kung Fu School from Joy, to whom it was entrusted by Sifu. To figure out where Tom and Stacy have stashed all of their stolen martial arts equipment, the four kids use their math skills to calculate how much is missing and to figure out directions to the soccer field. The story is engaging, with lively color art by Pantoja, and it demonstrates how math is integrated into everyday life. Calling the series Manga Math Mysteries is only partially accurate; Pantoja's art is manga-influenced, but the format is more in line with American-style comics. Elementary math teachers looking for a fun way to show students that math really does matter may want to use this in class. This is the first in the series, with three additional volumes currently available.
Horn Book
In Key, kung-fu students use basic math calculations to track down stolen equipment. In Ghost, the kids investigate strange noises in a classmate's bedroom; perimeter, area, and volume are discussed. Both mysteries are tepid, the manga-influenced illustrations are overly cartoony, and the math content feels forced. Unfortunately, in these cases manga + math + mystery = mostly mess.

THIELBAR, Melinda The Secret Ghost: A Mystery with Distance and Measurement Bk. 3. illus. by Yuko Ota. ISBN 978-0-7613-3855-0 . LC 2008053243. ea vol: 48p. (Manga Math Mysteries Series). CIP. Lerner/Graphic Universe 2009. PLB $29.27. Gr 2-5 This series is purported to help children with math skills. Friends from a martial-arts school use easy-to-see clues to solve mysteries. In The Lost Key , the students count shelves, multiply the number of jump ropes and mitts, and subtract the number of pairs of shorts they have to determine what is missing from the school. The math is too simple for the audience that might pick up the books. The artwork is vaguely mangalike but more cartoonish and looks as though it was drawn quickly with spare detail. The stories are thin and dull, and most children will solve the mysteries long before the conclusions. Carrie Rogers-Whitehead, Kearns Library, UT
