Patriotic Holidays

This July, Celebrate America With Patriotic Holiday Titles!

In July, we celebrate that quintessentially American holiday, Independence Day. So, what does the Fourth of July mean? Is it … a great time for family reunions? A day for fireworks and picnics? A “sports holiday”? A well-deserved three-day weekend in the middle of the summer? Even another day to honor members of our armed forces?

Well…yes and no. First and foremost, July 4th—Independence Day—is America’s birthday: the anniversary of the Continental Congress’ history-making 1776 vote to adopt the Declaration of Independence. The first salvo of the Revolutionary War occurred with the stroke of a pen, not the firing of a musket. The Declaration rhetorically threw down the gauntlet, announcing America’s determination to “dissolve the political bonds” it shared with Great Britain, to repudiate the British king’s “absolute tyranny,” and to form a new government based on “the consent of the governed.”

With this action, the signers were deliberately picking a fight with what was then the most powerful nation on earth, aware that they were woefully undermanned, massively outgunned, and risking their lives and the lives of their families. They knew they had everything to lose for the seemingly uncertain gain of the right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” And they did it anyway.

This month, as we enjoy the freedoms symbolized by July 4, we can explore American patriotism more deeply with the following great Perma-Bound titles. And we can also remember the courage of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and the many deep sacrifices that continue to make our freedoms possible. Happy birthday, America!
