Sarah Jacoby is a writer and illustrator. She has a BA in English Literature and Cinema Studies from Haverford College and an MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art in Illustration Practice. Her illustrations have won awards from the Society of Illustrators (Gold Medal), Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (Portfolio), Creative Quarterly, American Illustration, and Communication Arts.

Sarah’s artistic sensibilities stem from her parents’ strong belief in ingenuity and imagination. She says, “The natural world is still a realm that’s a bit sacred, full of possibility. It inspires because nothing is written on it yet.”

Sarah creates her soft illustrations, imaginative worlds, and idyllic landscapes with tiny brushes and Schmincke watercolors on hot press paper, then scans, digitally edits, and collages the final image. She uses a Wacom tablet and a Mac desktop through several iterations of printing and creating edits with a lightbox, and occasionally paints the final.

“I use a lot of texture in my work; I love fine detail and organic marks. I like atmosphere and mood, softness and subtlety--painterly qualities. I love books and prints, especially old-timey expressive styles. I really want the things I make to impact people in helpful, interesting and even magical ways.”
