Pat is an American poet and author of more than thirty-five award-winning children’s books. Her writing style often includes bilingual support and focuses on cultural diversity. She grew up in a bilingual family and is a graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso. Pat is a former teacher, university administrator, museum director, consultant, and spokesperson for creativity, inclusivity, and bookjoy (a concept Pat coined).

Pat is also the founder of the family literacy initiative Children's Day, Book Day--El día de los niños, El día de los libros (Día)--which has grown to include all children, languages and cultures.

Pat’s honors include the Pura Belpré Honor Award from the American Library Association, the Lon Tinkle Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Texas Institute of Letters, and the Virginia Hamilton Literary Award from the ALA; she has also delivered the ALA’s May Hill Arbuthnot Lecture. She’s a lifetime member of the United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY) and an honorary member of the American Library Association; received Kellogg Foundation National Leadership and NEA Poetry fellowships; and has been awarded honorary doctorates from North Carolina State University and the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Pat has three children and a granddaughter. She lives with her husband in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
