Friendship - Being understanding, caring, and respectful while building a lasting and valuable relationship with another person.

Deborah Hopkinson’s birthday is on February 4th.

Deborah Hopkinson grew up in Lowell, Massachusetts, received a bachelor’s degree in English at the University of Massachusetts and holds a master’s degree in Asian Studies from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

As a child she loved to read and always wanted to be a writer. Her books reflect what she cares about. The stories she has researched in history are about amazing people who might not be well known. She gives the reader an opportunity to visualize and explore what the missing characters such as women, children, and ethnic minorities were doing during history.

Her writing brings history alive for kids and shows them that it’s exciting. Most of her historical fiction books include a note in the back that will compare her story with documented facts. Along with proper illustrations her stories give the reader a thread to follow to want to learn more.

Deborah is the author of more than 45 books including picture books, short fiction, and nonfiction, and is a frequent speaker in schools and conferences. She has a full time career in philanthropy as vice president for advancement at Pacific Northwest College of Art.

She lives in Oregon.
