Cal Ripken, Jr.

Cal Ripken, Jr.’s birthday is on August 24th.

Calvin Edwin “Cal” Ripken, Jr., earned the name “The Iron Man” for his work ethic, strength, character, perseverance and integrity. He was a shortstop and third baseman for the Baltimore Orioles for his entire twenty-one-season career. Along with many Major League Baseball awards Cal is most remembered for playing 2,632 straight games, breaking Lou Gehrig’s record.

Cal and his brother Billy were coached by their father, Cal Ripken, Sr. during their MLB careers with the Baltimore Orioles. This is the only time in MLB history that a father simultaneously managed two of his sons.

After his MLB career, Cal founded and co-owns with Billy, Ripken Baseball and the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation. They work to grow baseball at the youth and professional levels as well as teach life lessons through baseball to disadvantaged youth from all over the country.

Cal has also been named as Special Public Diplomacy Envoy to the U.S. State Department. He travels the globe and uses baseball as a tool to spread goodwill.

He is a best-selling author of many adult, youth, and children’s books and is a highly sought after public speaker. Cal also hosts a weekly radio program on XM/Sirius Satellite Radio.

Cal lives in Maryland with his wife, Kelly, and their children, Rachel and Ryan.
