Twelve-year-old Cassie becomes frightened and confused when a man whose children she baby-sits, a man she trusts, makes sexual advances toward her. Despite some overloaded informational dialogue, Cassie's story resounds with conflicting emotions and demonstrates that such situations do not always have straightforward solutions, even when parents and the authorities are involved.
School Library Journal
Gr 5-8--Cassie is a typical 12-year-old girl. She is inexperienced but curious about sex and depends on her older cousin Lisa for straight talk and honest information. When new neighbors move in, Cassie's life suddenly becomes much more interesting. Fred and Angie Sloane are young, attractive, and fun, and they treat Cassie like a grown-up. She soon spends all of her free time helping them fix up their home and babysitting for their two children. Life with the Sloanes seems nearly perfect until the night Fred puts his hands on Cassie in a way she never expects. Overwhelmed with conflicting emotions, she confides in Lisa, who promises secrecy. But when it happens again, and again, Lisa tells. Confronted with the truth, Cassie must face her parents, the Sloanes, and eventually, herself. In this frank, yet sensitive portrayal of child molestation, Reynolds has done a superb job of weaving the complexities of difficult issues into the life of an innocent child. The characters are believable and sympathetic, especially Cassie and her adolescent friends. Even when faced with such ugliness in her life, she can still occasionally giggle about boys, pass notes in English class, and have pillow fights with her best friend. Her story resonates with authenticity, and it will surely touch many readers.--Marilyn Makowski, Greenwood High School, SC

At the age of twelve, Cassie is old enough to babysit. But when the father of two children for whom she babysits fondles her, Cassie is too confused and embarrassed to know what to do. She becomes more and more frightened as he continues to aggressively molest her. At last, she tells her teenage cousin, Lisa, and together they try to find ways to cope. Lisa realizes the escalating situation is more than the two of them can handle on their own and she breaks her vow of silence. The story explores the conflicting emotions of a young adolescent and the concern of parents who must protect their daughter's privacy and her well-being. In spite of the horrors of molestation, this is ultimately a story of healing and hope.
