Reviewed with David Milgrim's See Otto .K-Gr. 1. Ride Otto Ride! and See Otto, for very beginning readers, offer simple texts and comical illustrations. Otto, an adventurous little robot, leaves his home in See Otto and travels to an Earth-like planet. Crashing to the ground in front of an angry rhinoceros, Otto is soon propelled by the rhino's horn into the treetops, where he meets two monkeys as unflappable and good-humored as himself. In Ride Otto Ride , Otto and his two primate pals ride an elephant and offer to share their transportation with every animal they meet. When the elephant takes on one too many (a beetle) and collapses, the enterprising robot builds a wagon, so the little animals can pull their big friend to the watering hole. Though young readers may not catch the ironic echoes of the Dick and Jane series in the text, they will find a lot to like in Otto's world, with its clearly delineated characters, occasional pratfalls, and humorous edge. The energetic drawings and the muted palette are quirkier than those usually seen in books for young readers. An appealing option for children just beginning to read and feeling as hopeful and adventurous as Otto.

Boring old Dick and Jane have been replaced with a funny robot and his animal friends in these simplest of beginning readers. With chunky shapes and heavy black outline, the personable illustrations provide a lively embellishment for text that at times is just one repeated word, ("Walk, walk, walk, walk, walk") but still manages to tell a coherent, entertaining story.

PreS-Gr 1-Otto is a small robot that rides on Peanut the Elephant's back. The huffing and puffing monkeys, Flip and Flop, join it for the ride. Along the way, other animals climb up, until Spec the bug hops on and Peanut collapses. Otto then bangs together a wagon to pull Peanut and off they go to play in the water. The simple and predictable story is told as much through the bold illustrations as through the very brief and easy text. It follows the stated guidelines of the series with word repetition, simple sentences, and familiar words and phrases. Flowing much like a "Dick and Jane" primer with added humor, this tale will appeal to fledgling readers.-Nancy A.
