ALA Booklist
Literary scholars Hamilton and Jones, editors of Encyclopedia of American Popular Fiction (Facts On File, 2009), have collaborated again for a new installment in the Facts On File Library of World Literature series. The scope of the current work is limited to writers born after 1959 who publish fiction in the English language. The introduction notes the following characteristics of "contemporary" English-language writers: most have advanced degrees in creative writing, many originated from other countries or cultures, and those who were raised in the Anglo-American milieu of the 1980s use irony extensively in their works. The work contains more than 200 alphabetically arranged entries for writers and important works. Among the writers who are covered are Sherman Alexie, A. Manette Ansay, Susan Choi, Dave Eggers, Jeffrey Eugenides, Khaled Hosseini, Suzan-Lori Parks, and Ann Patchett. All author entries are followed by a bibliography with print and online resources. Entries for works are always followed by a full citation for the work and may list other resources. Readers will find author entries useful for basic biographical information and more extended information on their writing in general and on specific works. Work entries provide information on plot, characters, setting, theme, and style. The entries are followed by a bibliography of major works for the authors covered, a bibliography of general secondary sources, and a comprehensive index. This volume will be an asset for users of high-school, undergraduate, and public libraries.

Gr 9 Up&12; Literary gurus sign off on 200-plus clearly written, alphabetically organized entries that showcase many of today's widely acclaimed fiction writers and their works. Featured authors were born after 1959 and include Sherman Alexie, Douglas Coupland, Mark Haddon, and Kaye Gibbons. Readers may also access selections by title, including popular choices such as Yann Martel's The Life of Pi , Tracey Chevalier's Girl with a Pearl Earring , and Chuck Palahniuk's Fight Club . Extras include cross-references, "Bibliography of Major Works by Major Contemporary Fiction Writers," and "Bibliography of General Secondary Sources." This comprehensive work serves as a handy single-volume ready-reference guide and does not rival an entirely comparable source. Students will find it a helpful supplement to current fiction studies or recreational browsing, but, in spite of the series title, they will need to consult more specific encyclopedias for particular movements or areas of fiction (e.g., women's fiction, Southern fiction, etc.).&12; Cara Moffett
