A picture of Arnold Schwarzenegger gracing the cover of a book called Governor might always seem surreal. Still, his presence is a surefire way to shake up a staid topic and drive home the point that virtually anyone can ascend to this powerful position. Gorman's assertion that "the governor is like the president of the state" hits the right level of metaphor for the age group. For the most part, this entry in the Know Your Government series is filled with clear information and sectioned into helpful headings like "How Does a Person Become a Governor?" and "Famous Governors." Sometimes, however, Gorman's text is murky, as when she mentions the three branches of government without naming them, and speaks vaguely about "problems" that governors solve. Photos of state notables like Sarah Palin, Bill Richardson, Kathleen Sebelius, and Bobby Jindal are sharp and varied. For budding politicos, the back matter includes some relevant Web sites.
