The third title in Mora and Suárez's warm bilingual series, My Family, Mi familia, this joyful picture book tells a lively story of a young girl who gets a shy new kitten that hides and makes trouble. With English and Spanish text on each double-page spread, the line-and-watercolor pictures show the loving family as the kitten hides under the sofa, under sister's bed, in a flowerpot, until finally the soft friend snuggles up on the girl's lap. Fun for preschoolers speaking and learning both languages.

Sir Givret uses brains rather than brawn to save Guinevere and to aid him on his first quest, helping a fellow Knight of the Round Table who's in danger. While laughing at his adventures (though some laughs are forced), readers will admire Givret's resourcefulness. Comical brush and ink illustrations add to the levity.

This entry in Mora's highly successful bilingual series My Family /Mi Familia introduces a family's energetic new kitty/ gatita , whose mischievous antics inside and outside the house are all forgiven with warm affection. Suarez's full-page illustrations in bright watercolors depict a traditional home, featuring some Latino-accented patterns in sofa pillows, blankets and rugs and accentuating the cozily familiar setting of this simple bilingual tale. Cockeyed, dimpled smiles adorn every round face, human, feline and canine, making it clear to readers that there's more game than worry to the chase. "I almost touch her, / Casi la toco , / but she runs and hides again. / pero corre y se esconde otra vez ." Chasing and coaxing finally lead to kitty, their "soft (and sweet) friend / amiga dulce ," to come close enough for some love. Preschoolers learning or proficient in either language will smile along. (Picture book. 3-6)

PreS-K A perfect child's-eye perspective on having a new cat. The simple bilingual text explains the daily playfulness"kitty hides behind Grandma's shoes./ La gatita se esconde detrás de los zapatos de Abuelita " The book can be useful for English-language as well as Spanish-language learners. The brightly colored spreads are lighthearted in the depictions of the feline peering from a flowerpot on its side or dashing into a doll's crib. The mischief and the accompanying laughter or dismay displayed by the children are well rendered. The three siblings clearly enjoy their new pet. This is a good choice for bilingual storytimes or for sharing one-on-one. Linda M. Kenton, Pickleweed Public Library, San Rafael, CA

Our new kitty likes to hide.
A nuestra nueva gatita le gusta esconderse.

She hides under the table,
Se esconde debajo de la mesa,

inside a flowerpot,
dentro de una maceta

and behind the curtains.
y detrás de las cortinas.

We call out to her,
La llamamos, pero . . .

but will she ever come close enough to pet?
¿se acercará lo suficiente como para acariciarla?

Here, kitty, kitty!
¡Ven, gatita, ven!
