Gr 1-3 A vivacious little girl with round, round green eyes shares the magic of her grandmother's medicine. Whether it's a headache or a fever, a sore throat or undue wakefulness, Nana has just the herbal remedy that's required. Dual texts face one another on double-page spreads, with the Spanish version in red. The English is a bit stiffer and more formal than the chatty Spanish rendition, but both read well enough to share, and the bright, solid-seeming, colored-pencil cartoon illustrations are both eye-catching and humorous. An illustrated glossary includes the botanical and common names for the plants mentioned, the range in which they grow, the specific tribe or tribes in the Sonoran Desert region that use them, what they use them for, and how the plants are prepared for medicinal use. The botanical drawings that accompany these entries are both lovely and accurate. Not only a heartwarming tale of a young child and her grandmother, this is also an excellent introduction to the art of the curandera and the concept of alternative medicine in general.
