What could be worse than being time-warped away from home on the day before Christmas? Landing in George Washington's camp on the night before the crossing of the Delaware! In fact, according to Scieszka's improbable history, the Delaware would never have been crossed if Washington hadn't been nudged into action by Fred, Sam, and Joe, the hapless young time travelers known as the Time Warp Trio. But once events are set in motion, they stay in motion, with Washington's men intent on their mission, and Sam intent on finding his cat, which wandered off into the late eighteenth century. With witty dialogue keeping the pace moving along at a good clip, this will entertain readers who like their chapter books short, illustrated, and, if at all possible, funny.
Horn Book
In the series's fifteenth offering, Joe, Fred, and Sam's time-traveling great-granddaughter, Samantha, find themselves in 1776 Pennsylvania on Christmas Eve. Soldiers mistaking them for spies lead them to General Washington, who makes them accompany him across the Delaware. As usual, Scieszka delivers a silly, action-packed, sure-to-please story; just don't let on that it's also a history lesson.
School Library Journal
Gr 2-5-More historical mayhem with the Time Warp Trio. Great-granddaughter Samantha drops in from the future, requesting the boys' help. Her robot cat has vanished into the past, along with her school report on George Washington and the gang's time-hopping book. The three warp back to Christmas, 1776, where a very harried Washington is trying to decide whether to cross the Delaware. His officers are all for staying on their own side of the river and predict disaster in battle against the professional Hessian troops. Meanwhile, the freezing, demoralized Continental soldiers are looking for scapegoats. The time travelers must save American history, find Samantha's missing pet, and avoid getting hung as spies. All the series hallmarks are here-short text; snappy, irreverent dialogue; and slyly twisted history. A must for Trio fans-old and new.-Elaine E. ?I cannot tell a lie,? said general george washington. ?the time warp trio helped me cross the Delaware river and surprise the enemy troops.? so how did Christmas eve in the twenty-first century turn into Christmas Day in 1776? well, it was sort of an accident. And for once, it wasn?t Joe?s, sam?s, and Fred?s fault! Can American history survive the time warp trio? you?ll just have to ask sam?s time-warping great-granddaughter samantha . . . and her leaky cat.
