Snippets of information about paranormal beings and events provide only a superficial understanding of these topics. Featuring bland writing and average-quality color photos, the books in this series include historical background as well as occasional refutations of supernatural phenomena (for example, stating that clouds and experimental aircraft are sometimes reported as UFOs.) Gr 3-5-These small, tidy packages offer more than might be expected, given their length. Every page of text faces a full-page photograph or illustration, often in color, accompanied by an informative caption. Each volume sports bibliographic information sometimes lacking in larger treatments. The texts may be brief but the theories offered for each mystery, some evidence, and a sampling of the research that has been done are all put forth clearly. Although not as detailed as works for older readers that laboriously recount the experiences of alleged eyewitnesses to these mysteries, these books are surprisingly comprehensive presentations on endlessly intriguing topics. With their colorful and appealingly designed exteriors and interiors, they will find a warm welcome.-Ann G. Brouse, Steele Memorial Library, Elmira, NY Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.

Out of a long lake in Scotland many legends of an unusual sea beast have arisen. Is the creature a prehistoric animal that somehow survived several ice ages, or is it simply driftwood and shadows working on the imagination of the lake's visitors? the Loch Ness Monster explores stories of this fabled beast and the series of searches made to prove its existence.
