K-Gr 1-Each book opens with labeled photos of six objects that end with the featured letters. On the following pages, a photograph and a simple sentence using the words give each item a context. For example, "Deb plays with her cat," "Wendy wears a white hat." Readers can see the complete word, recognize it in a sentence, and then read the story that uses all of the featured words. Three- to five-word glossaries list unfamiliar words used in the texts (exercise, kibble, bran). Unfortunately, these books are extremely dry, the format is small, and the "stories" are predictable. Simple, easy-to-read titles with good plots and interesting concepts are readily available, so new readers need not rely on such simplistic writing.-Susan Lissim, Dwight School, New York City Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
