Though bullied by her brother at home, Pearl usually gets what she wants at school. Her current goal is to play Juliet in the school's musical production of Romeo and Juliet because she fancies Jake, who's playing Romeo. When Hoshi, a new girl from Japan, is cast as Juliet and Pearl becomes her understudy, the stage seems set for a predictable narrative arc, but surprises are in store. Initially treating Hoshi as a frenemy, Pearl discovers what a capable, empathetic, lovable person she's attempting to dupe, and her outlook changes. When an understudy is needed on opening night, Pearl wholeheartedly agrees to take Jake's part, playing Romeo to Hoshi's Juliet. If Hoshi seems almost too good to be true, it's reasonable, given that Pearl is narrating the story. McLachlan's portrayal of Pearl, from her motivation for bullying to her growing self-awareness, goes beyond usual mean-girl stereotypes, while the amusing moments keep the story's tone relatively light. The fourth book in McLachlan's Ladybirds series, which began with Flirty Dancing (2015), this works well as a stand-alone novel.

The conclusion to the Ladybirds series ( Flirty Dancing , Love Bomb , and Sunkissed ), focuses on Pearl navigating her rocky home life, friendships, and a new girl in school that may just steal her spotlight. Pearl is destined to be the star of this year's school musical. Being the lead is all she wants --especially as it means kissing super-hot Jake Flower. Then a new girl walks into the audition . . . Hoshi can sing, she's an amazing dancer, and she's seriously cute. Before Pearl knows it, Hoshi has stolen her part, her friends, and Jake's attention. But this girl doesn't know who she's messing with. Pearl's used to battling every day, and she's not going down without a fight!
