Previously seen in Claude in the City (2013), Claude is a rotund little pup fond of berets and dashing sweaters. When boredom strikes one afternoon, he decides an adventure in the countryside is in order. Accompanied by his best friend, Sir Bobblysock (yes, his friend is indeed a sock th personality), Claude hits the road, leaving buildings behind for an expanse of green fields. When the pair comes across Woollybottom Farm, they are invited to help the farmer prepare for the county fair being held on her land that very day. Charming line drawings with pops of red show Claude mingling with chickens, helping herd sheep, bathing Mrs. Cowpat's pigs, sampling cupcakes, and even wrangling a bull. Claude's gentle adventure is perfect for young readers moving beyond picture books. Humor blends with sweetness in this buddy tale, where new friends and experiences brighten Claude's day, and a loving home awaits him at its end. Give to Mercy Watson fans or readers of Shirley Hughes' Digby O'Day series.

K-Gr 2&12; Another chuckle-worthy installment in this charming series for newly independent readers. Claude and Sir Bobblysock decide to visit the countryside and come across Woollybottom Farms, where they meet Mrs. Cowpat. Claude and Sir Bobblysock help Mrs. Cowpat get ready for the county fair. Hilarity ensues as Claude helps the lady cow gather eggs, becomes a sheep dog, rides a horse, and even saves a snotty judge from an angry bull. Filled with illustrations in black and white, with touches of red and pink, this installment is quirky and fun. Smith does an excellent job of keeping the humor lighthearted and appropriate for young audiences. This fourth volume in the series will be enjoyed by fans of the previous books, though it stands alone admirably well. VERDICT Smith offers another strong entry in this delightfully odd series for picture book readers ready to dip a toe into chapter book waters.&12; H. Islam, Brooklyn Public Library
