Horn Book
The conflict between humans and intelligent sea creatures called Alphas reaches its climax in this trilogy-closer (Undertow; Raging Sea). Half-mermaid Lyric, now an accused terrorist, tries to exonerate herself in the human world while preparing to defend it from a new monster threat. Lyric is a determined, compelling heroine, but the book sometimes gets lost in its own mythology as its world expands.
Kirkus Reviews
Half-human, half-Sirena white teenager Lyric faces the biggest threat to the world yet in this trilogy closer. The story jumps timelines by chapters that alternate between a present time and the three months between the present time and the end of Raging Sea (2016). In the present, a shell-shocked Lyric has clearly been through hell but has emerged again from the depths of the ocean, bearing terrible news of a new existential threat, far worse than the Rusalka or Undine. In the three-months-prior storyline, Lyric encounters an intelligent Rusalka who keeps her alive in the face of mad Minerva's wrath and helps her learn more about Alpha mythology and the magic gloves that tether her to Husk. The alternating storylines don't always work well together—the present one prevents surprises in the past storyline and unnecessarily prolongs the wait for details on the long-hinted-at threat. Once Lyric reunites with her cast of supporting characters and their land-based enemies start moving, the story picks up. The romantic storyline starts with the love triangle between Lyric and stoic Alpha warrior-prince Fathom and the sweet, hot geek hybrid Riley but then concludes in a way that's as unexpected as it is satisfying, coinciding with character growth and development. Despite some pacing hiccups, a series ender packed with action, scary enemies, and satisfying character arcs. (Fantasy. 13 & up)
Voice of Youth Advocates
Lyric Walker is the daughter of a human father and an Alpha mother, from a world of oceanic warriors. After a battle, she wakes up a prisoner, enslaved to a villainous queen who carries the next heir to the Alpha legacy. Lyric forges a psychic link with Husk, from Rusalka (one of the neglected Alpha nations), and escapes to warn the land-dwellers of the pending arrival of the Tardigrade, a powerful mind-reading species from the Great Abyss bent on destroying anything that is not linked to their minds. Lyric returns to her family and friends, except for those Alphas who have been kidnapped by the government, including Fathom, her ex-lover. Lyric has to convince the world to team up with the Alphas against the coming threat. Lyric is an endearing Katniss Everdeen-type, called to inspire warring nations and leap through complicated romantic scenarios. Buckley proves Lyric is capable of fighting, showing the Alphas a new way of leadership, rallying the human world, and learning she plays a bigger role in the Alphas' future than even she suspected. The story’s secret weapon is Lyric’s network of family and friends who are humorous and engaging, entertaining readers while they make sense of small details and references to previous books. These connections provide the heart of the story, elevating it above a The Hunger Games cookie-cutter approach. Some readers may be displeased by some of the language and sexual situations.—Matthew Weaver.

After seven months as a captive of Minerva, the insane Alpha queen, Lyric Walker has escaped to the surface. Her only goal is to warn the world about the Great Abyss. When she finally arrives back in Coney Island, she discovers a world she never expected, one where humans and Alpha are finally working hand in hand to rebuild the country. But she soon learns that an old enemy allied with an old friend may kill them all before the monsters get their turn. Where will Lyric's loyalties, and her heart, lead her? With nail-biting action and romance, Michael Buckley's epic trilogy draws to a stunning conclusion.
