ALA Booklist
These exuberant books in the Ocean Life Up Close series make a great effort to draw readers in d, for the most part, they succeed. Everything is bright and eye-catching, from the background colors to the bold text to the plentiful photos with labels; the pages may even feel a bit overstimulating to some readers. Each spread typically includes two short sentences of text with one large photo or three small, labeled photos. The authors do a good job of presenting substantial information in simple, engaging text. The photos are well chosen, many dramatically fulfilling the promise of being "up close." The boxed features ough sometimes distracting d detail in a concrete way. For example, Crabs' "Species Spotlight" sidebar shows the blue crab's geographic and depth range, life span, and conservation status. Young readers will enjoy diving into these under-ocean books.

Some crabs grow their own shells while others find used shells to call their own. Find out about a crab's life cycle, physical traits, habitat, and more in this title for beginning readers. This title includes: visuals that teach about animal group classification, photo labels, range maps and conservation status bars, size comparison diagrams, food chain information, and speed meters that show how slow or fast an ocean animal moves."
