About the Common Core Standards

Education is at the center of our economy, our democracy—our very world. The Common Core Standards for mathematics and language have been designed to give American students an edge—a set of educational goals and practices that will ensure they have at their disposal a core set of real-world skills and knowledge that will fully prepare them for a successful future in the global economy.

The Common Core State Standards aim to "provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them." According to the Common Core mission statement, the Standards also:

"... are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy."

This state-led initiative is designed to:

  • Make sure every child in the country is given the tools to succeed by spelling out educational standards for K-12 education in language and math.
  • Provide teachers, parents, and students with a set of clear expectations, ensuring that everyone can work together toward common educational goals.
  • Maintain America's competitive edge by giving students the basic skills they need.
