Summer vacation offers down-time from a regimented school schedule, affording students an opportunity to engage in many recreational activities, including reading. According to Let's Read. Let's Move. Strong Minds (www.serve.gov/strongminds.asp), "Kids engaged in summer reading activities are better prepared for the new academic year, and show improvement in spelling, writing style, vocabulary and grammatical development."
Reading self-selected books is a great way to relax and enjoy summer vacation! Ask your students if they would consider including recreational reading this summer. Pose a few thought provoking questions, such as "What are some of the topics you enjoyed during the year and would like to know more about?", or "What are some hobbies you wanted to pursue but did not have time for during the school year?" You can also ask students to think about the types of stories they like to read or the character types that interest them.
Remind your students that they can enjoy the outdoors while reading under a tree on a nice summer day— or inside if it rains! They can also bring along a book to read while riding in the car to a vacation destination, or while camping, relaxing at a beach or lake, or at home after a long day of playing outside.
Help your students relax, wind down and maintain their reading skills during the summer months with the selections above from Perma-Bound.
