"Most of us can read material well beyond our measured instructional level if we are interested in the topic and motivated to read. Similarly, even the weakest reader will struggle through a book that is hot or cool", as noted by Lori Rog and Paul Kropp (2001).
Your students are interested in books that hold their attention. Worthy and McKool (1996) found that students would engage more in reading if allowed to make choices about their reading material. According to Guthrie and Wigfield (2000), effort and commitment to reading increases if genuine student choices are provided. Just imagine if you were told what to read and how to react, it could take away your satisfaction for reading and ownership of the content.
Teachers and Librarians have much to consider when choosing which books are made available for enjoyment and reading development. "Engaged reading is a merger of motivation and thoughtfulness. Engaged readers seek to understand; they enjoy learning and they believe in their reading abilities. They are mastery oriented, intrinsically motivated, and have self-efficacy"- John T. Guthrie (2001).
Perma-Bound offers the booklists shown above of engaging books for your students to become "Stuck Like Glue" when reading their next great choice!
