Captivating series books are great reading motivators for students of all ages, and students eagerly await the upcoming title that is "Next in Line". Whether it's Junie B. Jones or Twilight, teachers and parents should not overlook the value of series reading in the ongoing effort to turn students into lifelong readers.
A curriculum study unit published by the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute noted that a beginning reader must find enjoyment in reading in order to become a lifelong reader. This means that it is imperative to supply students with books that will interest them. Series books provide a "hook" for students, and once they are pulled in by the initial title, they need several additional titles by the same author, with the same characters, settings and story tone that first got them reading. As they complete titles within a series, students gain confidence in reading as an activity which, allows them to enjoy reading and in turn, increases their chances of becoming more avid readers into adulthood.
