The Crossroads series of teaching guides suggests parallel titles that contrast or elucidate themes suited to four levels of high school coursework. These theme levels begin with the introductory study of genres for grade 9 and advance to American literature, British literature, and World literature for grades 10 through 12.

Purpose: Methods:

Suggest post-reading activities for groups and individuals
Encourage reading, writing, discussion, and listening as adjuncts to critical thinking
Introduce assorted applications of a single theme. Example, Redemption or Alienation.
Show literary devices as a means of expressing a theme. Example, internal monologue.
Encourage individual learning styles. Example, film analysis, outlining, discussion, composition, research, debate.
Extend themes through practical applications. Example, journals, letter-writing, role-playing.
