Research

Reading Aloud Is For Everyone.

Studies show that all ages, from babies to high school students, can benefit from being read to. In his book The Read Aloud Handbook, author Jim Trelease notes that reading aloud to a student acts as a kind of motivational advertisement for reading. When children see adults excited about reading, they will catch their enthusiasm.

Pre-school and elementary students benefit greatly from being read to, as they are able to enhance their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. In addition, reading aloud introduces the language of books, which differs from language heard in daily conversations, on television, and in movies.

Older children and teens benefit from the read aloud experience. It can give them an opportunity to enjoy more interesting books that might have been too difficult for them to read on their own.

Listed above are some tips to get the most out of reading aloud. For young children, read slowly with expression, and try using different voices to distinguish characters. Follow the words with your finger as you read, allowing them to see that words are read from left to right on the page. For older students, read short sections of books or articles aloud to catch the student's attention, and then encourage them to read the rest on their own.
