Ten Ways To Help
PDFResearch
Did you know that 900 million trees are used each year for pulp and paper? Would you be surprised to know, in a lifetime, the average American will throw away 600 times his or her adult weight in garbage? These numbers are not surprising when you consider the U.S. contains just 5% of the world's population, but consumes 25% of its resources. These are alarming trends that continue to play havoc with our environment- but what can be done? The 3-R's of recycling are part of the answer: Recycle, Reuse, and Reduce. There is also a key 4th "R" in the solution- READ! Reading can help young people learn about environmental issues we all face, as well as ways to improve. Elementary age students can be introduced to simple ways to conserve such as turning off lights, avoiding running water while brushing teeth, and much more. Older students can be introduced to more complex environmental issues and how to deal with them. In honor of Earth Day, April 22nd, 2008 we offer a selection of titles that will educate readers of all ages about environmental challenges and what they can do to help.
